A Satisfying Japanese LUNCH

Japanese food is loved all over the world. With so many great restaurants in town, it can be difficult to choose from. Our editors’ choices are the crunchy, crispy tempura, the ever-prominent sushi, and one of Japan’s soul foods, chazuke. Try them out for lunch!

01. MACHIYA DINING TEM-PU

A restaurant specializing in tempura only a few minutes’ walk from the world heritage site NIJO-JO Castle. Experience a real Kyoto atmosphere in this renovated old townhouse, which still keeps the homey, old wooden feel of when it was first built 100 years ago. It even has a courtyard. Among the four available lunch options, the most popular is the Tempura Teishoku (¥1,500). It comes with seasonal vegetable tempura, chicken, pork and seafood tempura, totaling 12 different types. It also comes with two different side dishes, as well as miso soup and pickles. They also have a Chicken Tempura Teishoku (¥1,000), as well as a Soysauce Flavored Tuna Bowl (¥1,500) for you to enjoy. Take in the Kyoto atmosphere while enjoying a reasonably priced meal representative of Japan’s dining culture.

02. NISHIKI SUSHISHIN

This restaurant is in the bustling Nishiki market. As you pass the door, the long, cypress counter welcomes you to sit down. We recommend the Premium Set Lunch (¥2,800), a hearty 10 pieces of fresh sushi with some thin rolls and red miso soup. Experience genuine sushi at a reasonable price. You will even get to sit back and watch as the chef shapes the sushi at this counter-only restaurant.

HYAKUSHOKUYA SUSHI-BEEF

A restaurant offering tender and high-quality Japanese beef. We recommend the Set menu (¥1,188) that lets you enjoy both the sushi-beef and beef chazuke. Chazuke is usually a bowl of rice with tea poured on it, but here, you put roast beef on a bowl of rice and douse it in a soup stock (dashi). It is very well known for its incredible umami (savory taste). Limited to 100 meals a day, you will have to go directly to the restaurant and reserve your meal ticket if you want to try this.
